In an underground or enclosed parking garage there is a risk that carbon monoxide from vehicle exhausts can build up to an unhealthy level. An effective and responsive ventilation system can not only prevent this, it can also provide valuable smoke extraction in the event of a fire.
Most parking garages are open air or multi-storey, with open sides which allows them to self-ventilate, from the wind and from the air drawn in and out by cars as they enter or leave. Depending on the size and layout however, there can be areas that don’t get as much fresh air as they should; underground parking garages certainly don’t. To prevent the build-up of harmful fumes, it is essential that an extraction system is put in place.
Traditional parking ventilation systems are either based on duct runs with high- and low-level extraction or on more simplistic designs with extract fans and supply from fresh air ramps. Our goal is to remove the need for any ducting by using Jet Fans to distribute the air.
Unlike traditional system design approaches, with a Woods Air Movement USA solution, single or multiple points of extract are placed strategically, with Jet Fans that will operate independently or in groups as required. They only switch on when fumes build up, making them economical to run.
During day-to-day operation, the level of CO2 is constantly measured by gas monitoring sensors throughout the parking garage. Upon detection of increased levels of contaminants, selected Jet Fans are activated to dilute the contaminated air and guide it towards the point of extract.
In the event of a fire, a smoke detection system will cease the day-to-day operation of the car park ventilation system and switch it to an emergency extract setting. Depending on the chosen design, the system will react quickly to clear the smoke and to provide increased visibility for quicker, safer evacuation and improved access for emergency services.
Our car park ventilation solutions are designed for the specific structure. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, combined with Woods Air Movement USA in-house expertise and own fully researched input data is used to validate the overall performance of the system both in day-to-day and emergency smoke extract mode.
CFD Analysis allows our engineers to assess the garage or shop operation with respect to its acceptance criteria; this could be air quality or average air charge rate or minimum airflow speed to maximum allowed smoke spread depending on the project need. The engineer can then optimise the position and operation of the system to best suit the criteria. This is supported pre-CFD by detailed calculations to demonstrate system compliance and ensure that the system can achieve the required criteria.
